We advance cultural institutions and those in the arts by transforming ideas, scholarship and exhibitions into books that build reputation and legacy.

Studio

Founded by creative director Caleb Cain Marcus, Luminosity Lab develops the creative strategy and design vision of publications for leading museums, universities, publishers, curators, and artists.

The studio’s distinct experience in book design and production, grows from a belief that books can facilitate change and are an interpretive act that shape how art and ideas live within collective memory.

We find beauty arises from a response to the intentions of the work and the expression of creativity through a system of ideas, color, materiality, typography and sculptural sensibility.

Pivotal projects include: Carrie Mae Weems: Varying Shades of Brown for Brown University hailed as “a sculptural object—proving that books still push boundaries in a screen-dominated era” by Cent Magazine; Taking Care: Black Angels of Sea View Hospital for the Staten Island Museum; and New York Home: Now for Museum of the City of New York.

Caleb’s art is in the collections of the Getty and Metropolitan Museum of Art and holds an MFA from Columbia University.

Philosophy

We believe design flourishes through open and diverse dialogue with artists, curators, and cultural institutions, and unfolds through shared research and reflection.

Our work explores the poetic and the typographic, the conceptual and the material. In every project, we seek to create books that participate in the contemporary dialogue of art while extending exhibitions, archives, and ideas, into lasting public form.

We focus on ongoing partnerships that build a practice around art, research, scholarship and public visibility for the cultural institutions, publishers, curators and artists with whom we collaborate.
