The design evokes Brown University’s pioneering performing arts center  The Lindemann featuring a main hall with five ingenious and changeable floor configurations.

Our design breaks the conventions of a book having a static sequence.

Like The Lindemann’s main hall, Carrie Mae Weems: Varying Shades of Brown features five different interior sequences through which the influential American conceptual artist’s works can be experienced by the reader.

The cover recalls the scalloped pattern of The Lindemann’s fluted aluminium panels of its exterior façade onto which Weems’ Remember to Dream artwork was projected.
